The 2004 American teen comedy movie Mean Girls is about Cady Heron, a naive teenager who, after years of homeschooling, negotiates the social order of a contemporary American high school. Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Lacey Chabert, Amanda Seyfried, Tim Meadows, Ana Gasteyer, Amy Poehler, and Tina Fey are among the actors who appear in the Mark Waters-directed and Tina Fey-written movie.

Plot of movie

Homeschooled Cady Heron returns to Evanston, Illinois after 12 years in Africa. She befriends outsiders Janis Ian and Damian Leigh, who warn her to avoid the “Plastics” clique. Cady becomes attracted to Aaron Samuels, Regina’s ex-boyfriend, and learns about the “Burn Book”. Cady commits to Janis’ plan to ruin Regina’s reputation. They sabotage Regina’s wardrobe, humiliate Gretchen, and trick Regina into eating nutrition bars. After a drop in Regina’s reputation, Cady replaces her as the new “queen bee.”

Cady, a manipulative and image-obsessed girl, throws a house party and admits to Aaron that she has been failing math class to help him. Regina, retaliating, distributes the Burn Book, causing chaos among junior class girls. Regina insults Janis’ sexuality, leading to her being struck by a school bus. Cady takes full blame for the book and is shunned by her peers. She joins the school Mathletes and wins the championship, but declares that all her classmates are wonderful. The Plastics disband, Regina joins the lacrosse team, Karen becomes the school weather reporter, and Gretchen joins the “Cool Asians” clique. Aaron graduates and starts a relationship with Cady.

Production of movie

Tina Fey suggested to SNL producer Lorne Michaels that Rosalind Wiseman’s nonfiction book Queen Bees and Wannabes could be turned into a movie. Michaels contacted Paramount Pictures, who bought the rights to the book. Fey wrote the plot from scratch, borrowing elements from her own high school experience and her impressions of Evanston Township High School, the inspiration for the film’s fictional North Shore High School.

Casting of movie

Lindsay Lohan was cast as Cady Heron in the film Regina George, while Rachel McAdams was cast as Regina due to her kind and polite nature. Blake Lively was initially considered for Karen Smith, but producers told her to keep looking. Amanda Seyfried was suggested for Karen due to her spacey and daffy sense of humor. Lizzy Caplan was chosen for Janis due to her raw emotion. Evan Rachel Wood was offered a role but turned it down due to scheduling conflicts. Jonathan Bennett was hired as a last-minute replacement due to his resemblance to Jimmy Fallon.

The film was primarily shot in Toronto, Ontario, at Etobicoke Collegiate Institute, Malvern Collegiate Institute, and Montclair High School, with principal photography spanning September to November 2003.

Releasing of film

Mean Girls was released on VHS and DVD in North America on September 21, 2004, five months after its theatrical release. Both the fullscreen special collector’s edition and the fullscreen collector’s edition included several deleted scenes, a blooper reel, three TV spots, the theatrical trailer, previews, and three featurettes.
